D&D has been know for giant bosses that tower above players. I have always wanted to in my PNP games. "roll initate" and take out A colossal red dragon mini thats not really mini. :axe:.
last year when it came out and I saw it all I could think of was when could I use that in a game. but with DDO how many truely great and chalanging fights are there. sadly I have yet to play any of the dragon raids but how much does it take to kill them?
not to mention the many other enemys that are not dragons. the tarresque. Balor demons, Lloth, tiamat, ect. the problem is puting these bosses in the game so they take a long time to kill but the raid can stay alive long enough to kill them.
Unfortunally most of the epic boss raid fights in the game all require some gimmick to beat them, and once you know the trick the raid really isn't that much of a challenge.

but where is the fun in the gimmic to beating the boss. make it a challange with the gimmic or at least a close fight like half the part dead or somthing

It depends on the raid, something like the Titan has a pretty unique gimmick that everyone hates since 2 people do everything. The hound is a bit better since everyone else is running defense, but Velah is just a giant beatdown. Some of the rush of the fights comes from running the raid for the 10th time only to have what seems like something minor go wrong, and the whole party starts to panic. Its both annoying, and exhilarating when everyone is trying to figure out a way to salvage a run before it fails completely

From experiance playing WOW (I know its bad), many of the raid boss fights are chalanging and very long the need to keep DPS at peak, and the tank to hold enough threat to keep the DPS from getting hit, makes for interesting fights. Sadly they are simple, most of the time annoying, more often than not unpleasent. The most perfect example of a boss fight was never in a MMO at all, but the final boss fight in Golden sun the lost age, was both a chalanging fight but not annoying. it too had a gimmic that you could not cast any summons the whole fight or the boss would use the ability know as Ruin and all but one or 2 of your toons would be dead. the fight crippled your party and in a way making the fight harder. sadly capturing the depth of a turn based fight is hard to do in a real time setting.

The difference between those WoW raid encounters and DDO's is that casters in most other MMO's regen mana over time. So, if you had a VoD- or Shroud-type raid in another MMO, once one Spell Caster was OOM, they could just back off and start recharging while the other casters blast/heal out. As long as you bring enough healers or casters to keep this cycle going indefinitely and a tank to taunt, you could work on a mob for hours (which, I hear some WoW raids do take) ..
No thank you! :)

some of them do take hours I find it fun to keep at a boss for a while and beat at them. boss fights that end in less then 3 mins are too short and ones that last for more than a hour are too long. the trick is finding a happy medium.
