So I've asked for a driving game and a USB wheel for christmas, and so now of course I have to recommend the controller and the game to my patient wife.. I'm looking for something both the kids and I can enjoy... so maybe two games..
Curious if any of you play said games and what you recommend.

Not my area of expertise on new games, but what genre of racing game are you looking for? Simulation (accurate physics, tuning, ect.), or Arcade (floaty, high speed, jumps, ect.).
Also, is this for PC, Xbox, or PS3?

PC, as the subject says. :reddevil:
I think the kids will want a forgiving arcade game.. I'm not sure how realistic I want to be, but enough to where real physics are in the mix. One of my favorite games growing up was Test Drive, which did at least reward a crash by totaling your car, and you could turn on manual shifting etc, if you were adept enough at doing all of that with a joystick and a keyboard...

Well, Burnout series has always been good as a good arcade racer. Burnout Paradise I hear is one of the best of the series, but unfortunately is getting a bit dated.
Split/Second is a pretty fun arcade racer. You basically drive as fast as you can while avoiding large explosions that you and other racers can trigger in attempt to make others crash.
As for more realistic racers...
Well, if you did have a PS3, I'd say get Gran Turismo 5. That should make it out just in time for the holidays.
Test Drive 2 is coming out in January it looks like, so you could hold out for that.
Beyond that, I don't really have much of an idea. If this was ten years ago though, I'd be recommending Rush 2049. :)
the driving games for the wii(I know you said PC) are good pants...and easy to use...Mario Kart is a blast.

First 2 that come to my mind are GT and NFS. Most popular as console games, but I'm more then confident that they can be PC games as well.

Theres a new Need For Speed that just came out that looks good, I always did like the series. Now, as you want it for the PC thats a tad harder as the PC was never a driver friendly platform, I think Driver (which doesnt really meet your criteria) is about there is, aside from a couple Nascar ones. If you can find an old version of Cursin USA that should keep the kids happy and is pretty entertaining for a while

Turns out EA has a free persistent world thing called Need For Speed World - keyboard controls, but the kids are loving it. My daughter has turned out to be a serious cop-killer (she want on to become an ace in my old copy of Jane's World War II Fighter Aces as an encore), and my son likes the "Nitro" button.
