GenCon 2008, Day 1!

Yup, you pretty much know that you aren't taking part in the usual Indianapolis-related convention when you overhear something like the above quote. I doubt you'd hear such a thing at the Indianapolis 500 or Men's Final Four, either.

Indy is once again in the throws of gaming excellence, and DDO is there!

Turbine has done a really nice job with their booth in the Electronic Gaming Hall (which is in the same area as all of the vendors). Really, nice work. Tolero, Kate Paiz, Eldorudo and others are there demonstrating some content that's coming to the game and promoting DDO to the D&D masses. I'm sure it's tiring to spend much of the day at the booth, but they really have done an excellent job.

There's also a ton of news to talk about! Besides new footage of as-yet-unreleased content, DDO Senior Producer Kate Paiz has let slip (aka - publicly promoted) some MAJOR exciting news about what's in store. I'll have more on that in a bit, but first - here's some pics of the Turbine booth:

There's a row of top-notch computers, with monitors below for gamers and above for game-watchers. Asheron's Call has a computer and Lord of the Rings Online has a few too, but many of them have DDO installed and ready to go!

(Some non-DDO player - yes, I asked - checking out some new content!)

That puzzle is sort of from a Goodblades Quest, which has gotten a major overhaul as part of the New Player Experience. I think I'll probably write up a separate post with SPOILER WARNINGS all over it to detail more of the NPE and what's in store, but here's a few shots taken from my digital camera of the screen:

(SPOILER ALERT - PICS OF NEW CONTENT)

Note the snow....

The place is called Korthos, and it's where new players (and us rerollers) will explore before entering Stormreach. I really only got a few minutes with it today as I had a ton to do on my first day (import martial arts DVD's, seminars, friends to meet, t-shirts to buy, games to check out, etc), so I'll have more in a future post.

A boat. And is that a quest-giver? FYI - the snow looks awesome.

Also: DX10 was shown on the monitors. The water looks excellent! My pics just can't do it justice, of course.

Now for the news:

Whew! News I do have for you. I didn't record Kate Paiz today as I'll get a chance to do that later on (she was quite busy meeting with folks, the booth was hoppin'), but she did pass along quite a few bits of information both to me and to other visitors to the Turbine booth:

Update 7.1

- See those pics above? The new player experience? The original plan was to release them with update 7.1, but there's still a bit of tweaking and polishing to do on parts of it, so the New Player Experience is going to be shifted into Mod 8. I actually think this is probably for the best as Kate explained that they really want to promote Mod 8 and it makes sense to have new players joining us with Mod 8 have the new experience to go along with it. Basically, and I'm paraphrasing here, they were looking at the tweaks still needed for Update 7.1 and decided that since they were already well underway with development of Mod 8, it would just make sense to get that stuff polished and out at the same time.

(Here's my take as well) - Just releasing the NPE by itself as an update might be kind of underwhelming, despite how cool it is, since it really is just content for low level players. Rolling it into Mod 8, which will feature high-level content, is fine with me. And this stuff looks really good!

- The NPE may be headed to Risia within a few weeks.

- Update 7.1 will probably be released within a few weeks and include numerous bug fixes.

Mod 8

Again, I'm paraphrasing here, and Kate did say some things that I just wasn't able to write down in time enough to remember all the details, but the gist of Mod 8 will be very, very cool to people who liked Reaver's Bane (aka - the Gianthold Tor stuff).

- Mod 8 will "continue the Reaver's Bane storyline." The Stormreaver disappeared at the end of the raid and is now boosting up his forces for another assault. This time he's, quote, "amassing an army of undead dragons" to continue the fight.

- Although Mod 8 continues the Gianthold Tor stuff, Kate says that the new content will take place in a new area. Sweet.

- Mod 8 is expected to feature the release of henchmen to DDO!

- Now, don't hold Kate to this as gospel word of an exact release date, but she mentioned to me that Turbine would like to see Mod 8 released "October-ish, give or take about three weeks in either direction".

Mod 9

- Mod 9 will feature the continuation of the Shavarath story line. I had specifically asked her about this given the confusion about when the Shavarath tale would continue.

- Kate told me that they would like to see Mod 9 released "New Year's-ish". Aka - probably around the end of this year, early part of 2009.

More pics:

Turbine's handing out trial cards for both DDO and LOTRO. DDO 10-day trials on one side, LOTRO 14-day trials on the other side. Promotion spotted!

Our very own Tolero showing a GenCon attendee some cool new DDO stuff.

There's some pictures on the DDOcast site, but they are a little spoiler filled, so I won't link to those. The snow looks pretty good though.

Here's a bit more news from the DDO boards about Cohorts/Hirelings

You will have the ability to tell your hireling to pull a lever.

Disposable heroes will have a new AI. Hopefully smarter than the current Coyle.

We will be releasing more info on minions later... And I'll be watching the forums to answer some of your questions...

Your mercenaries will be able to climb ladders and jump. If they manage to get stuck anyway, you can make them teleport to you, so they should never get permanently left behind.

Your helpers will look a lot like normal characters; they'll have a subset of the same classes, spells, feats, etc available to you. Total party size is still limited to six with at most one henchman per player, however; they're meant to assist small parties, not to make full ones twice as big.

Not for this module. If the new AI and control system works well, we may expand it out for summons later.

Your supporters will drop soulstones like normal people and hang around as ghosts like normal people. They'll be able to use rez shrines, and you can hit them with spells that fix being dead.

They will have character levels, feats, enhancements, equipment, and distinct personalities.

Various minions will be available at different levels. These are strictly mercenary hirelings that serve for a short period of time - as you level up, you will be able to acquire contracts of more experienced cohorts.

Currently we're thinking that we'll restrict them from raids - they tend to misbehave in them (stop chopping down Titan pillars!) and that content really should be the domain of twelve real players.

They won't give it away, if they do. That's their loot.

hmm, not bad. At the very least they should help with soloing some quests where you needed levers hit you couldnt reach

Very un-DnD like though .. unless its a hatching :)

Seems to be on the Forgotten Realms plan: powerful NPCs do your heavy lifting...

You know though, it makes for a great introduction to the game. Most likely, it is just a baby dragon, but from the article you get some NPCs to help you out. Which, considering they're adding a henchmen system, is probably a nice introduction to that too.

Plus, think about when you first really get to fight a dragon. About the soonest is around level 8. Players have to go through 8 levels to even see a dragon! Dragons are supposed to be a high level encounter, but people coming to play Dungeons and Dragons Online are going to be disappointed not to see any epic content for quite some time.

Actually, I had suggested adding in something like this to the game quite some time ago. For the most part, the intro to DDO is quite boring. You're thrust onto an island, you talk to Euphonia, collect some stones, hop onto a ship, and then you're running errands for a barkeep and then a shady Gerald Goodblade. It's just not very exciting, and there's really not a whole lot of direction. Plus, you're bombarded with a dozen of pop-up help screens just seconds of walking across the dock.

And one more thing, with all this new player experience stuff they're building up, I think something big might be in the works. They're obviously planning for new players to start coming to game, and they're trying to make sure to make a very good impression. Could be a big marketing push, could be an expansion, who really knows for certain. But I'm telling you, they wouldn't be bothering with all this new player stuff if they weren't expecting (or at least trying) to bring new people to the game.

Agreed on all that, Coldin -- and the scope of this explains why the new player experience got pushed back from Mod 7.

It's true to the D&D tradition, and there's tons of times when we'd want a hireling or a (working) summon -- I just hope they don't do something that damages the grouping dynamic - a human player should always be preferable.

Well, I think it was Eladrin, stated that raids will still probably be offlimits for henchmen. And, I'm not quite sure, but I think they're "in addition to" and not "instead of" type of thing. So you can bring 6 players, and 6 henchmen if you really want. From the sound of it, they seem like they'll be fairly intelligent though. Climbing ladders, jumping across chasms, accepting raise dead spells. Should be fairly interesting anyway.

Ah, I was thinking I read something like that, but couldn't quite place it. So, at most, you get to bring along 3 players, and 3 cohorts. That's acceptable to me. It's nice when you only have 3 people on that want to run midbies, and you're all monks, so you grab a rogue, cleric, and mage hireling to tag along.

I'm very curious how it's all going to work out.

Looks like they really are gearing up towards a big advertising push. Some of the stuff looks like it could be really cool. Granted it still doesn't help a lot of long standing players unless they open up another character slot or two.

Interesting all around... *coughlevelcapincreasecough*:piggy:

Ya, without a level cap increase what do we need new content for? So my cap characters can do something new while not getting any experience.

I have also noticed a lack of any more crafting information. At lest that would give us some reasons to continue to collect vendor trash loot to increase our net worth.

Remember .. its all vast and mysterious .... we're not supposed to know if there's a level cap until we log in and our XP bars turn red again ... just like we're not supposed to know any thing about crafting until we throw the right things on the alter and accidentally make something new .. and we won't know about new character slots until we log in one day and the Create button is ungreyed again..

All the information of the last couple of days is nice, but there's still a lot we're missing.. :(
