I have a bunch of maps that I have on my guild site that I want to bring over for the quest information area. Now my question to the community is this - do you think we should add the images as we normally do in the forums, or should we look to another database program for managing images?

The reason I ask is for performance and organizational issues. I can set up a 2nd database for images, and use a freebie program to manage images, then reference it as links here. If we end up with a lot of images sometimes its lengthens the time to load the page or it could take a bit of time to find the specific image you're looking for.

Let me know your thoughts on this and if anyone has any recommendations for image management programs.

The problem with photobucket is that over time, links end up bad, usually from the user deleting or moving them (or quiting DDO and clobbering all their photobucket stuff *gasp*) or even just doing housekeeping and organizing of their photobucket folders.

Having a DB for them would solve that as any images therein would be locally contained.

My question to Jules is this: how much space are you willing to allocate to an image database? The Screenies that my DDO program takes average out at 600kb and that'll add up pretty quickly if we get a lot of images in there.

Hmm good question. Total server size is 10gb, but I'm hosting multiple sites on it (or will be). I can get additional space for additional cost. We might want to have images resized to fit a specific file size limit before uploading them.
